Our mission, team, and ways to get involved.
ThermONet is building a global community dedicated to standardizing and advancing near-surface thermal infrared (TIR) imaging in ecosystems. Our mission is to create an accessible, interoperable, and scientifically rigorous network that empowers researchers to better monitor, compare, and interpret canopy temperature and ecosystem responses to climate change.
Our article in Eos outlines the value of TIR data, community-led standards, and the vision for a coordinated global network.
All objects above absolute zero (0 Kelvin) emit thermal radiation. TIR sensing detects this radiation to estimate surface temperature without physical contact. In ecological research, this approach provides a powerful lens into ecosystem processes by enabling non-invasive measurements of canopy temperature—a key indicator of plant function and health. As ecosystems warm and weather extremes intensify, these temperature data are increasingly vital for tracking vegetation changes and resilience.
Explore recent research using near-surface thermal infrared measurements to advance ecological insight, improve climate models, and more.
